How to Play Russian Draughts
To play Russian Draughts, follow these simple yet strategic steps:
- Starting Position: The game is played on an 8x8 board with alternating dark and light squares. Each player starts with 12 pieces on the three rows closest to their side.
- Piece Movement: Men (simple pieces) move forward diagonally to an adjacent unoccupied square. If a piece reaches the king's row on the opposing player's side, it becomes a king.
- King Movement: A king can move diagonally to any free square, both backward and forward.
- Capturing Pieces: Capturing is mandatory. If a piece can capture an opponent's piece by jumping over it to an empty square, it must do so. If after capturing, another jump is possible, the player must continue the jump sequence.
- Capture Rules: A captured piece is left on the board until all captures in a sequence have been made but cannot be jumped again. Players must make all the captures in the chosen sequence.
- Winning the Game: The game is won by capturing all of the opponent's pieces or blocking them so they cannot make a move. A game is a draw if neither player has the possibility to win, or if the same position repeats itself for the third time.
Gameplay Instructions
- Mandatory Captures: Always prioritize capturing moves over non-capturing moves.
- King Promotion: A piece that reaches the king's row is crowned and gains the ability to move and capture in any diagonal direction.
- Continuous Jumps: If a piece can make multiple captures in a sequence, it must continue to do so until no more captures are available.
- Game End: The game ends when one player has no pieces left or when a player's pieces are blocked from making any legal moves.
